Genelec in the Top 6 Stand-outs at Electronic House Expo 2009
At the 2009 Electronic House Expo, Michael Chafee (FL Rep) took the initiative to set up a full 7.1 Genelec Surround system with HT315A’s, HT210B’s, an HTS6 and a pair of HTS4B’s as part of the show’s “Demo Alley”. During the course of the show, attendees and press personnel had an opportunity to experience a tri-amplified Genelec system, many for the first time. As you might expect, the system caused quite a stir at the show.
Bob Archer of CE Pro recognized the HT315A as one of the six stand-out products of the show.
He reported: the Genelec HT315A Three-way Active Loudspeaker is capable of delivering a real theater-like experience in the home. It incorporates a 15-inch woofer, a 5-inch midrange driver loaded within the company’s DCW waveguide design and a 1-inch metal-dome tweeter. The speaker internally houses an integrated amplifier/crossover that delivers 400 watts to the woofer and 120 watts to the midrange and tweeter.
Listening to everything from a movie soundtrack like “Phantom of the Opera” to Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Jeff Beck, the HT315A delivered clean volume within its Demo Alley space. The most amazing part is that the Genelec suite of speakers produced SPLs over 120 dB with no distortion. Listening to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” at that clean level made me feel like I was standing next to Tony Iommi’s Laney amps at a live Sabbath show. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Some additional comments taken from one popular online forum.
From one top CI professional, who has no connection to Genelec, and currently doesn't install them: - "Also the sound though very refined by Thiel and a tad stepped back by PS audio, the sound was totally steam rolled over by the Genelec surround."
Another respected CI pro observed: - "I had to stop by Mike Chafee's Genelec room at the end of the show to cleanse my ears from the other wares being peddled at the show."
Yet another declared: - "Yet again Genelec demonstrated why they are the speaker of choice for large high end Home Theaters with a budget to match. Domestic Hi-Fi manufacturers are simply left wilting. Mike Chafee's (Genelec) demo was flat out easily best in show."
Below is an extract from an independent press report, available on the EHX website:
"A truly amazing loudspeaker! A bit pricey for most but for those who want “Studio Quality” sound in a small package and have medium to deep pockets, Genelec really has no pier. A few well known sound reinforcement speaker (and electronics) manufacturers have thrown their hats in the ring with some powered speaker offerings but have a long way to go to catch up to Genelec’s technology and state of the art performance.
The HT315A falls midway in the Active 3-way group but there are several more-and-less expensive, high performing siblings in the line as well. The upper priced models can be quite expensive for even the most well healed but perfection comes at a price!
All speakers contain active electronic crossovers, overload protection and power amplifiers. The only connections required are the line level input signal and power from the wall. No speaker/amp matching required. They have done it all for you, and volume? These speakers play louder and cleaner than just about any other loudspeaker / amplifier combination that I’ve ever heard regardless of price. If clean, deep shear power is what you crave, look no further, these are a real bargain! "
